China's first gas hydrate extraction successful

China successfully extracted natural gas hydrate for the first time in the South China Sea on Thursday, the China Geological Survey announced. This means China is the first country in the world that can produce steady gas continuously. Gas hydrate is essentially solidified methane also known as "combustible ice" and is seen as a future source of energy with great potential. According to the Ministry of Land and Resources, China is expected to employ combustible ice for commercial use by 2030.
