Chinese President Xi Jinping called for "consultation and cooperation" while speaking at the 2019 China International Import Expo (CIIE), taking place in Shanghai on Tuesday. Xi also urged the participants to continuously seek to reduce trade barriers.
"In the face of contradictions and frictions, the right solution lies in consultation and cooperation. All problems would be settled in the spirit of equality, mutual understanding and accommodation," said Jinping.
"We should insist on seeking development with openness; deepen exchanges and cooperation, hand in hand instead of breaking off. We should pursue 'tearing down walls' instead of 'putting up walls,' resolutely opposing protectionism, unilateralism, continuously reducing trade barriers," he added.
French President Emmanuel Macron said that China needs to be open to the world, as the world needs China. "China is no longer the workshop of the world for the production of cheap products, it is justly working on developing its domestic market, offering prospects for its middle class, leading the global competition on high added value technological products," he added.
The second edition of the China International Import Expo is taking place at the National Exhibition and Convention Centre in Shanghai, from November 5 to 10.
