China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Geng Shuang warned that China is not afraid of a trade war with the US, speaking at a press conference in Beijing on Tuesday, as the countries apparently fall into a new spiral of trade tensions.

"China never submits to any external pressure. We are determined and able to maintain our own legitimate rights and interests," stressed Geng Shuang.

The country has recently announced tariffs on $60 billion worth of US goods in retaliation to US President Donald Trump's decision to hike a tariff to 25 percent on $200 billion (€178 billion) worth of Chinese goods on May 10.
