Chile: Protest movement heralds new decade

Chileans celebrated the New Year and the beginning of the 20's in the capital Santiago's Plaza Italia - the heart of the ongoing protest movement - on Tuesday.

The unrest did not seem to put a damper on celebrations, with social movements using the occasion to bring out symbols seen regularly during demonstrations.

Some clambered onto the statue of Manuel Baquedano, which was lit up by lasers and lights. A firework display also took place with the nearby Torre Telefonica in the background.
