Chile's President Sebastian Pinera has declared a state of emergency in the capital Santiago. A downtown building was engulfed in flames and the metro system was shuttered as the city descended into chaos amid riots. Earlier on October 6, protests started among high school and university students after government hiked metro fares, then it turned increasingly violent on Friday afternoon. Government officials shut down the metro system. Violent protests have left widespread damage across the capital city where nearly 6 million people live.
