Boris Johnson has lost a bid to call an early general election to break the Brexit deadlock, as the bill blocking no-deal heads to the House of Lords.

The defeats followed a tumultuous day in parliament, which has seen the traditional political order turned on its head and leaves the future of Brexit, the government and the country far from certain.
