Ursula von der Leyen began her term as the European Commission President at a small ceremony in Brussels on Sunday.

She was joined by the new heads of the European Parliament (David Sassoli), the European Council (Charles Michel) and the European Central Bank (Christine Lagarde).

During her speech, von der Leyen said there was "no better day" to start her work that the 10th anniversary of the Lisbon Treaty.

She called on her peers to act as "custodians of the Lisbon spirit" for the duration of their term.
