Nearly 8,000 people demonstrated against the Belgian State Secretary for Asylum and Migration Theo Francken in Brussels on Saturday over his comments on African migrants.

Protesters held banners stating “Theo first in the boat” and “we are not dangerous” as they marched past a centre for migrants.

Mathieu Bietlot, Sociopolitical Coordinator at Bruxelles Laïque addressed the crowd, "Today we are walking the streets to demand that the minister be sacked.”

The demonstration came several days after Francken told a news agency that the European Union must turn back African migrants who paid people smugglers to cross the Mediterranean.
