An EU-hosted conference saw some $6.97bn (EUR 6.18bn) donated to fund humanitarian aid packages to Syria, as explained by the Head of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Brussels on Thursday.

"It will be an important signal of the international community's solidarity with the people in Syria and with the neighbouring countries hosting huge numbers of refugees," Matt Lowcock said.

The conference is the third edition under the title 'Supporting the future of Syria and the region' and this year's haul set a new record.
