Efforts are underway to rescue animal survivors of the bushfires that have recently ravaged South Australia's Kangaroo Island, as seen in footage released by Humane Society International (HSI) on Thursday.

Wallabies and koalas were rescued from amidst the devastation on the island by HSI Senior Specialist for Disaster Operations Kelly Donithan, who commented that ""Each one we get in is one less dead, at least has a chance, a chance of survival."

Kangaroo Island is renowned for its relatively untouched nature and is home to endangered species and others found only on the island, but experts fear that the bushfires, which have so far burnt one third of the island, may have wiped some of these animals out entirely.
