Police used tear gas and deployed water cannons against protesters who demanded resignation of central government and early parliamentary elections in Tirana on Saturday.

The rally which was led by Democratic Party chief Lulzim Basha saw protesters breaking through police barriers and assembling upon the stairs of the government building.

Protesters threw firecrackers, flares and other objects at the police and set a car on fire.

Albania has seen unrest since February 2019 with protesters demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama over corruption charges and failure to fulfil economic promises.

Rama has reportedly rejected the resignation calls and refused to allow early elections.
