One of Afghanistan's presidential candidates Abdullah Abdullah claimed victory in the election at a news conference in Kabul on Monday, before the official results were announced.

"I have the most votes and the election will not be going to the second round", said Abdullah. Meanwhile his main opponent, the current president Ashraf Ghani, also declared victory in the poll.

Both politicians been sharing the rule of the country since 2014 after the presidential elections results were marred by fraud allegations.

The Independent Election Commission will publish the first results in more than two weeks.
