What’s up guys? It’s Sussan Mourad here with Clevver News and it’s about to be my favorite season y’all…
And not we’re not talking about Hot Girl Summer or Grand Theft Autumn slash Thotumn or whatever people are calling it.
I’m talking about AWARD SEASON!
And the Emmys kick it off tomorrow so I’m here to break down who’s likely going to win and who I think SHOULD win.
Let’s start with one of my favorite categories Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.
The nominees are STACKED to say the least. We’ve got Christina Applegate, Rachel Brosnahan, Julia-Louis Dreyfus, Natasha Lyonne, Catherine O’Hara, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
I mean talk about an incredible group of women.
But based on this group and the shows they are nominated for, my gut is telling me that Julia-Louis Dreyfus has this one in the bag.
She is nominated for her leading role in Veep and if she wins she will go seven-for-seven in winning Emmys for playing Selina Meyer.
But I haven’t forgotten about Rachel Brosnahan who won last year for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Julia wasn’t nominated last year, and Rachel came in after her show’s first season and won her very first Emmy.
While I think Julia will probably win again, which don’t get me wrong she does deserve, part of me thinks Rachel should maybe win it again.
Maisel is just SO good and only has gotten better and better as the show has gone on. Rachel has completely stolen my heart as Midge Maisel so maybe I’m biased.
Ok moving on to another big category, Lead Actor in a Drama Series.
This category is also seriously stacked with talent.
The nominees are Jason Bateman, Sterling K. Brown, Kit Harington, Bob Odenkirk, Billy Porter, and Milo Ventimiglia.
And if I had to guess who was going to win this one… based on the fact that there are TWO nominees from the show ‘This Is Us’, it’s got to be one of them.
My guess is Sterling K. Brown.
While I know Kit Harrington just had his last season of Game of Thrones, I don’t think anything matches Sterling’s performance in this past season of This Is Us.
He was so raw and vulnerable and emotional, I personally loved it. Not that I have a say or anything.
Sterling is no stranger to the Emmys either. He’s already won for his role as Randall Pearson in ‘This Is Us’ back in 2017 and he won in 2016 for his supporting role in The People vs. OJ Simpson.
But who do I think SHOULD win this category?
Yeah, probably Sterling, but I HAVE to give a proper shout out to Billy Porter for his role in ‘Pose’.
He does an unbelievable job at combining comedy and drama into his role as Pray Tell.
One person tweeted quote, “If Billy Porter doesn’t win an Emmy this year for #PoseFX, I’d like written reason from all voting members of the @TelevisionAcad to explain why. LETS MAKE HISTORY NEXT WEEK! #Emmys #Emmys2019”
And another said quote, “Give #billyporter that goddamn Emmy! #pose #tonyawards”
So I guess we’ll just have to see who wins this one and if the Television Academy will have to provide that fan with a written response as to why Billy didn’t win, if he doesn’t.
Next up, let’s talk about the biggest awards of the night, the one that literally everyone is talking about…
Drum roll please.Outstanding Drama Series. The shows that are nominated are “Better Call Saul," “Bodyguard," “Game of Thrones," “Killing Eve," “Ozark," “Pose," “Succession," and “This Is Us.”
And I have no doubt that Game of Thrones is going to take home the award for this one. I mean the show is nominated for a record breaking 32 awards! This was their last season and last chance to be nominated and regardless of what you thought of how it ended, that show literally can’t lose at award shows. I mean there’s a shot in the dark that any other show could win, but if I was a betting woman, which I’m not, my money would be on GOT.
As for who SHOULD win… well my pick is Better Call Saul.
It would be nice if Better Call Saul finally got some love after 32 nominations and no wins. The show is awesome and deserves an Emmy but in this group of nominees, it might not happen. Sadly they might be snubbed again.
Speaking of snubs, let’s talk about some of the names that are not nominated but definitely should be.
And don’t come at me about Big Little Lies or Orange Is The New Black because they were not eligible for this year’s Emmys.
One of the biggest snubs of the night is that my girl D’Arcy Carden didn’t get nominated for her epic role as Janet in ‘The Good Place’.
The Good Place is about to head into its last season and in my opinion, Janet has been such a standout on that show.
