Commissioner urges Croatia to enhance media freedoms, migrants' integration, fight hate speech

Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Nils Muiznieks says in his report on Croatia that the country should do more in prosecuting war crimes, ensuring the exercise of returnees' rights, promoting media freedoms and fighting hate speech and preparing for the integration of migrants.

The report notes that the national parliament, led by the right-leaning Patriotic Coalition and the centrist Bridge party, after barely a month in office, replaced the then HRT director-general and appointed an acting director-general who then demoted and reassigned around 70 journalists and editors in a move that critics call an idelogically motivated purge.
