Under pressure, Islamic State steps up fatal attacks in Iraq

Islamic State has claimed responsibility for a spate of deadly attacks in Iraq in an apparent response to territorial losses the extremist militia has suffered there in recent months.

The attacks have primarily targeted security forces and Shiite Muslims whom the radical Sunni group views as heretics.

Here are some of the deadliest assaults this year:

July 3: More than 100 people are killed and 157 injured in a car bombing hitting a busy commercial area in the district of Karada in central Baghdad.

May 15: Five people are killed when Islamic State militants attack a natural gas plant in Taji, north of Baghdad, triggering a blaze in three gas storage units. Six militants are also killed.

May 13: Gunmen open fire inside a cafe in the mainly Shiite town of Balad, north of Baghdad, killing 13. Later the same day, two suicide bombers kill four security personnel in the same town.

May 12: Three policemen and two suicide attackers are killed in an Islamic State raid on a police checkpoint in Abu Ghraib on the western outskirts of Baghdad.

May 11: More than 90 people are killed in a series of bombings in Baghdad's Sadr City, Rabie Street and Kadhemiyah areas.

May 2: At least 22 people are killed and 30 injured in a car bombing targeting Shiite pilgrims west of Baghdad.

May 1: Thirty people are killed and 55 injured in twin bombings claimed by Islamic State in the mostly Shiite southern town of Samawa.

February 28: A suicide bomber kills 28 people and injures 62 in a market in the mainly Shiite Sadr City district in eastern Baghdad.
