UN to identify perpetrators of six chemical weapons attacks in Syria

Investigators have found six potential cases of chemical weapons attacks in Syria whose perpetrators they will seek to identify, the United Nations said in a report Friday.

The report to the UN Security Council marks the initial phase of the work of the joint investigative mechanism between the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and the UN set up to name the perpetrators of attacks using toxic materials in Syria.

The Security Council agreed on the mechanism in August after reports of chemical weapons attacks continued despite a 2013 resolution requiring Syria to get rid of its chemical weapons stockpile and end such attacks.

The report names the following incidents as potential cases for its investigation:

- Talmenes, Idlib Governorate, April 21, 2014

- Qmenas, Idlib Governorate, March 16, 2015

- Sarmin, Idlib Governorate, March 16, 3015

- Marea, Aleppo Governorate, August 21, 2015
