Two US naval vessels detained by Iran, Pentagon says

Two US naval vessels were detained Tuesday by Iranian forces in the Persian Gulf, US defence officials confirmed.

After losing contact with the "two small naval craft," US officials established communication with Iranian authorities "who have informed us of the safety and well-being of our personnel," the Pentagon said in an email to dpa.

The Pentagon has received assurances the sailors would be allowed to continue their journey promptly. They were en route from Kuwait to Bahrain when they were detained.

"Our sailors are safe," White House spokesman Josh Earnest told CNN. "They are being afforded ... the proper courtesy that you would expect."
