Two earthquakes hit Ecuador

Two earthquakes hit northern Ecuador in rapid succession late Sunday but there were no immediate reports of casualties, the state news agency Andes said.

The magnitude 6.2 and 5.9 shocks were registered 10 minutes apart by the Geophysical Institute.

Their epicentre was on Muisne Island in Esmeraldas province.

A magnitude-7.8 earthquake on April 16 in Ecuador killed 670 people.

President Rafael Correa called for calm on Twitter and said there was no tsunami alert.

There were widespread power cuts, according to El Telegrafo newspaper.

School classes were cancelled Monday in Esmeraldas.
