Trump, a candidate with no inhibitions, rebuilt himself a politician

Donald Trump is a political novice who has never held political office, but as his campaign has borne out he has no inhibitions.

Despite many verbal attacks, insults and lapses of judgment during the primary season, he finished strongest by far in the lead of a Republican pack that started off with 17 candidates.

Trump, who is running on the motto "Make America Great Again," turns 70 on June 14.

The controversial New Yorker with the unmistakable heavily sprayed comb-over is a billionaire largely through his real estate empire.

Trump is a former a Democrat, ex-Independent and former presidential candidate of the Reform Party.

The fourth of five children, Trump attended a military academy from the age of 13. He studied at Fordham University before transferring to the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied economics, graduating in 1968 with a bachelor’s degree.

Trump's father was the son of German immigrants. In 1974 Trump became president of his father's construction company and gave it the name Trump Organization.

This was followed by investments in hotels, casinos and luxury apartments. His wealth grew well into the billions through various other business activities, including beauty pageants, his role in the TV reality show The Apprentice, books, furniture and fashion brands.

His business ventures didn't always go smoothly: he has four bankruptcies behind him, but has been able to restructure each time.

Married three times to glamorous women, his two divorces made headlines. Trump has five children.
