Tokyo stocks tumble on Brexit fears

Japanese shares fell around 3.5 per cent on Monday as uncertainty continued to hang over Britain's referendum on its European Union membership.

The benchmark Nikkei 225 Stock Average lost 582.18 points or 3.51 per cent to stand at 16,019.18. The broader Topix index was down 46.18 points or 3.47 per cent at 1,284.54.

A referendum to determine whether Britain will remain in the EU is scheduled for June 23.

Stock markets across Asia also closed in the red.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index was down 529.65 points or 2.52 per cent, to 20,512.99 and the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index was down 94.09 points, or 3.21 per cent, to 2,833.07.
