Three Palestinians dead; No end of violence in sight amid Biden visit

Two Palestinian gunmen were shot dead in Jerusalem Wednesday while a Palestinian with a knife was killed in the West Bank, as a series of attacks showed no signs of relenting during a visit by US Vice President Joe Biden.

A Palestinian tried to stab a member of the Israeli security forces guarding a checkpoint near the West Bank city of Qalqiliya, but was shot dead, the Israeli military said.

Meanwhile, two other Palestinians were killed in a gunbattle after they were tracked down to a spot just outside Jerusalem's walled Old City. A civilian passerby shot by the gunmen from the car was in serious condition, police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said.

The gunfight came after a manhunt prompted when bus passengers and a motorist in Jerusalem reported seeing two men with rifles in a car and hearing shots in the northern part of the city, Rosenfeld said.

Jerusalem was on high alert as Biden met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ahead of talks with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

There were four attacks in Jerusalem and in the Tel Aviv area on Tuesday, in which an American tourist and four Palestinian attackers were killed. At least 15 people were injured.

Biden, who is in the region for his first talks in Israel and the Palestinian areas in six years, was meeting former Israeli president Shimon Peres in the southern Tel Aviv suburb of Jaffa on Tuesday, when a Palestinian went on a stabbing spree there.

Netanyahu conducted an emergency security cabinet meeting overnight, during which several stringent measures were approved.

These include further securing the wall in and around East Jerusalem and building a new security fence in the area of the southern West Bank city of Hebron, where many knife attacks have taken place.

The cabinet also voted in favour of revoking entry permits into Israel of Palestinian workers and harsher punishment for Israelis who illegally drive Palestinian workers with no permits from the West Bank into Israel.
