Taliban overrun district centre in north-western Afghanistan

Taliban militants overran a remote district centre in Afghanistan's north-western Faryab province on Tuesday with Afghan forces retreating to an Afghan army base away from the main bazaar, an official said.

"Ghormach district was under Taliban siege for five to six days and Taliban were able to finally overrun the district centre this morning," Mohammad Arif, a provincial council member from the province said.

He said Taliban fighters had cut off the road connecting the district to the provincial capital by laying mines and hampering Afghan security efforts to send assistance and reinforcements.

Taliban militants on Twitter claimed they had captured the district, which they had also overrun over a year ago.

In the north of the country, the situation in the capital of Kunduz province remains a stalemate nine days after the Taliban launched a coordinated attack.

According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) around 33,000 people have been displaced due to the fighting in Kunduz.

In the past week, the Taliban have launched offensives in Kunduz, northern Baghlan and southern Helmand provinces stretching Afghan security forces thin throughout the country.
