Syrian government troops return heavy weapons to major Aleppo road

Syrian government troops have returned heavy weapons to Aleppo's Castello Road to secure the thoroughfare from a possible takeover by militants, a senior Russian officer in the area, Sergei Kapitsyn, says in comments carried by Russian state news agency TASS.

Syrian state troops in the area endured "intense shelling" the previous night, with two servicemen wounded, Kapitsyn says. Castello Road is a key route for humanitarian aid deliveries to the war-torn city.

Despite the violence, Russia says it is prepared to extend a fragile nationwide ceasefire in Syria for another three days. To do so, the United States needs to ensure that rebel groups it supports do not violate the truce, Russian General Viktor Poznikhir tells TASS.
