Suicide bombing in Kabul restaurant leaves three dead

A suicide bomber killed a guard and a 13-year-old boy outside a restaurant in the Afghan capital, leaving at least 18 people injured.

The suicide bomber drove an explosives-laden vehicle to attack the Afghan-owned French restaurant, officials said.

A Kabul police spokesman said an accomplice of the bomber was captured at the scene.

"Our preliminary investigation results show that only two attackers were involved in last night's restaurant attack," Basir Mujahid said.

"Three of my family members including myself were injured by the blast," said Ahmad Jamil, 22, whose home was across the street from the restaurant.

The defensive wall in front of the house was blown to bits, while other homes had gates, windows and doors ripped off by the explosion.

"We were sitting inside the house and talking with our guest when we heard a loud explosion following which our entire house shook, and windows broke," said Jamil.

"We felt threatened by the restaurant when it opened, but we didn't have the power to stop it from opening," he said. "I think the neighborhood will be united against it opening again."

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for the attack through Twitter: "This evening an attack was launched on a restaurant owned by invaders where numerous foreigners live."

A January 2014 Taliban attack at a Lebanese restaurant in Kabul killed 13 foreigners and eight Afghans.
