South Korea to inspect current VW, Audi cars for emissions-fakery

The South Korean Public Prosecutor's Office in Seoul has widened investigations against German carmaker Volkswagen in relation to the company's emissions scandal, media reported Sunday.

According to the Yonhap news agency, the South Korean Environment Ministry will test VW's EA 288 engine in addition to its predecessor the EA 189.

The 1.6-litre EA 288 is found in the VW Golf as well as the Audi models A1 and A3. The results are due by the end of April.

The carmaker has admitted to equipping diesel vehicles with software to disguise emissions that vastly exceeded limits set by regulators. The fraud was discovered in September 2015. Some 11 million cars worldwide are affected.

Earlier this month, the Seoul Central District Prosecutor's Office raided a Volkswagen inspection centre in connection with its recall of emissions-faking cars.

Officials were investigating whether Volkswagen engineers interfered with devices during testing, the report said.

The headquarters of Volkswagen's Seoul unit was raided last month.

Korean authorities in November issued recalls of several models of the VW and Audi brands. These included vehicles with EA 189 engines sold between 2008 and 2015.
