Six killed in presumed al-Shabaab attack against Somali police post

At least six people were killed Monday when people believed to be Islamist militants attacked a traffic police station in central Mogadishu, Somali police and officials said.

A suicide bomber detonated a car packed with explosives at the entrance to the police station, followed by an assault by gunmen, police officer Ali Hassan said.

Left dead in the attack were three police officers, one civilian, the suicide bomber and another militant who was shot dead by police.

Fifteen people were reported to have been injured. Most of them were civilians, some of whom had small businesses outside the police post, witness Ali Mahad said.

No group officially claimed the attack, but the pro-insurgent website www.somalimemo.net said it had been carried out by al-Shabaab, which has battled the government for a decade.
