Russian helicopter shot down in Syria by Islamic State; crew dead

A Russian military helicopter was shot down by Islamic State fighters in Syria on Thursday, killing both crew, the Russian Defence Ministry says.

The incident happened during a test flight of the Mi-25 helicopter east of the desert city of Palmyra, the ministry says in a statement carried by Russia's TASS news agency.

The helicopter was downed by gunfire from Islamic State fighters who had broken through government lines, causing it to crash in government-held territory, the ministry said.
