Russia announces a 48-hour ceasefire in the Syrian town of Daraya, a suburb of the capital Damascus.
Russia initiated the ceasefire to provide humanitarian aid to residents in the area, Sergei Kuralenko, head of Russia's center for promoting peace in Syria, says in comments carried by state news agency TASS.
The ceasefire went into effect at 00:01 local time Wednesday (GMT 22:01 Tuesday) and had been agreed with the governments of Syria and the United States, Kuralenko says.
