Royals meet royals in Bhutan

Britain’s Duke and Duchess of Cambridge

Jigme Khesar is a king at 36, while William, 33, is a prince in waiting and second in line of succession to the British throne.

Both Bhutan and Britain are constitutional monarchies where the monarch is the head of state but the powers to make laws lie with the elected legislature.

Including their respective wives, all four royals studied in England. Jigme Khesar was at Oxford University, while William studied at St Andrew’s University in Fife, Scotland, where his wife Kate Middleton, 34, was a fellow student. Jetsun Pema, 25, was at Regent College in London. Both Jetsun Pema and Kate studied art history as part of their courses.

Jigme Khesar also studied at India's National Defence College in New Delhi, while William went on to the Royal Military Academy in Sandhurst, Britain.

The British and Bhutanese royals chose their own spouses, rather than having arranged marriages.

Both couples are fluent social media users, using it to announce the birth of their children.

The British couple have two children, a son and a daughter, while the Bhutanese couple’s first child, a son, was born on February 5.

Both Jetsun and Kate are seen as style icons in their countries. In Bhutan, Jetsun usually wears colourful traditional outfits, as does her husband.

Kate is not member of the heriditary gentry and though Jetsun is of noble descent, her father Dhondup Gyaltsen worked as an airline pilot, while Kate’s parents were briefly flight attendants.
