Rockets fired into Turkey from Islamic State-controlled area in Syria

Two rockets were launched on Thursday into the Turkish border town of Kilis from a Syrian area controlled by the extremist militia Islamic State, Turkish news agency DHA reported.

Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said on Tuesday that German Chancellor Angela Merkel was scheduled to visit a large refugee camp in the town on Saturday the following week.

Merkel's spokesman Steffen Seibert told dpa he could not confirm the trip.

Three people were injured during the attacks, two of whom were Syrians, according to DHA. One of the rockets hit a building housing Syrian refugees. State news agency Anadolu had reported two injured.

Turkey responded with artillery fire and airstrikes by anti-IS coalition fighter jets on the Islamic State-controlled area.

Several rockets had already been fired into Kilis and the surrounding area over the past months.

Turkey says it has taken in more than 2.5 million refugees fleeing the conflict in Syria.

In an effort to stem the flow of refugees to the EU, the bloc is giving Turkey 6 billion euros (6.8 billion dollars) to take back irregular migrants who land in Greece.

For each returned Syrian migrant, the EU has pledged to take in a Syrian refugee living in Turkey.
