Report: Asian and Middle Eastern airlines are safest in the world

Asian and Middle Eastern companies dominate a ranking of the world's safest airlines, with Hong Kong's Cathay Pacific and Dubai's Emirates in first and second place, German flight safety experts said Tuesday in their annual report.

The report, which is published by Hamburg's Jet Airliner Crash Data Evaluation Centre (JACDEC) and ranks carriers based on the proportion of flights during which a dangerous or risky incident occurred, only had two European airlines and no company from the US in the top 10.

KLM from the Netherlands and Portugal's TAP ranked sixth and tenth respectively, according to the report.

Despite several fatal plane crashes last year - including the Germanwings crash over the French Alps and the Metrojet crash in northern Sinai, both of which were caused intentionally by human action - 2015 was a safe year for flying, the report found, arguing that flight safety is increasing.

"Despite all the concerns and dangers, [airline] passengers can look to the future with confidence," said Jan-Arwed Richter, co-founder of JACDEC.
