A Malaysian court on Monday approved the four-day detention of popular singer Namewee while he is investigated on accusations of insulting Islam in a music video, a police official said.
Namewee, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, was detained at Kuala Lumpur's international airport on Sunday as he returned from an overseas trip, Penang police chief Abdul Ghafar Rajab said.
The 33-year-old singer was arrested due to complaints about his music video for the song "Oh My God," which features various Malaysian places of worship, including mosques, in the background.
Some 20 Muslim organizations had lodged complaints about the video with the police, claiming it defiled a place of worship with the intention of insulting Islam.
If proven, the crime can carry a penalty of up to two years imprisonment, a fine, or both, Abdul Ghafar said.
