Police: Toll in Ghana bus crash rises to 71

The death toll from an accident between a bus and a truck in northern Ghana has risen to 71, a senior medical official said Thursday.

The bus collided head-on with a truck carrying tomatoes on Wednesday night near Kintampo in the Brong Ahafo Region, police said earlier.

"The death toll has shot up to 71. We are working hard to save the rest of the injured," Bismark Owusu Fosu, a medical director at the Kintampo Government Hospital, told dpa.

"Some of the badly injured have been airlifted to the regional hospitals."

The police are investigating reports by survivors that the bus, which belonged to state-owned company Metro Mass Transit, had problems with its brakes.
