One killed, many wounded in attack on security forces in Kazakhstan

At least one police officer was killed and several wounded in an attack on security forces in Kazakhstan on Monday, according to media reports.

Unidentified gunmen opened fire on police in Almaty, the largest city in the former Soviet republic. A spokesman said the motive for the attack was yet unknown.

The Muslim majority country, like other Central Asian nations, fears the potential rise of Islamist terrorism, but has also downplayed the risk.

The Islamic State extremist group has threatened Kazakhstan in video messages in recent weeks.
