US President Barack Obama was on fiery form Saturday night for his last White House correspondents' dinner in office, raising more than a few laughs.
"Is this dinner too tacky for The Donald?" he asked about the absence of Donald Trump, the populist outsider who is leading the nomination race to represent the Republicans in the next election.
"What could he possibly be doing instead? Is he at home, eating a Trump Steak, tweeting out insults to Angela Merkel?" Obama said. Trump, a keen user of social media, has been outspoken in his criticism of the German chancellor's policy to welcome asylum seekers.
Obama lambasted the lack of foreign policy experience of Trump, who has never held elected office.
His fellow party members Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders did not escape the outgoing president's good-natured tirades, and nor did Vice President Joe Biden.
He also referenced his own grey hair since taking office, and made a joke about now being able to take 3 am foreign diplomacy calls because he's up all night anyway to use the toilet.
In a shout-out to the Democrats' nomination front-runner Clinton, the only woman in the race, he said: "Next year someone else will be standing in this very spot. It's anyone's guess who she will be."
After speaking for 32 minutes, he concluded his remarks with: "Obama out" and a microphone drop.
