Obama launches effort to cure cancer, with Biden leading

US President Barack Obama announces a new national effort to find a cure for cancer.

"For the loved ones we’ve all lost, for the family we can still save, let’s make America the country that cures cancer once and for all," Obama says in his State of the Union address.

Obama says he is putting Vice President Joe Biden in charge of the effort.

Biden, whose son died of brain cancer last year, worked last month with Congress to give scientists at the National Institutes of Health "the strongest resources they’ve had in over a decade" in the search for a cure to cancer, he says.
