North Korea sentences US man to 10 years with hard labour

A North Korean court has sentenced a US citizen to 10 years of hard labour for spying and subversion, China’s official Xinhua news agency reported Friday.

The communist regime in Pyongyang showed the 62-year-old South Korea-born Kim Dong Chul to media around a month ago, where he allegedly confessed to spying for South Korea's intelligence service.

Kim was convicted of attempting to steal classified military information, South Korean news agency Yonhap quoted the North's Korean Central News Agency as saying.

He was reportedly arrested while waiting to be given a USB drive containing the intelligence from a contact in the north-eastern city of Rason.

He was reportedly a regular visitor to Rason, a special economic zone in North Korea.

Kim lived in China near the North Korean border for 15 years before his arrest and conviction.

The defendant was arrested in October, according to North Korean state media.

Tensions between Washington and Pyongyang have increased since North Korea’s latest atomic test in January and its repeated missile tests. The UN Security Council tightened sanctions against Pyongyang in early March.
