Magnitude-6.4 earthquake shakes Taiwan, damage reported

An earthquake measuring 6.4 in magnitude struck southern Taiwan early Saturday morning.

The epicentre was northeast of Pingtung near the port city of Kaohsiung, Taiwanese authorities reported.

The effects of the tremor were felt throughout the island. A multi-storied building collapsed into a street in the city of Tainan.

Rescue teams were on the scene, but no injuries or fatalities had yet been reported, according to the Apple Daily newspaper.
