At least 21 people were killed in a pipeline explosion at a power plant in central China's Hubei province on Thursday, state news agency Xinhua reported.
Five people were injured, with three of them in critical condition as of late Thursday.
An initial investigation found that the blast was caused by a broken pipe, Xinhua cited local authorities as saying.
The high-pressure steam pipe broke during testing, city officials reportedly said.
Photos of the plant in the city of Dangyang carried by state media showed the facade of the building charred by the blast.
Street demonstrations by citizens who are against the construction of power plants for safety and environmental reasons have been on the rise in China in recent years.
