At least 15 people are dead following a suicide attack late Sunday claimed by Islamic extremist militants in the Iraqi town of Ein Tamar, according to Central Euphrates Operation Command.
Five gunmen targeted a wedding in the town, located 50 kilometres west of Karbala province. Four of them were killed by security forces while the fifth managed to blow himself up and injure 16 people, al-Iraqiya state TV reported, citing the operation command.
Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack a day later in a statement published on the Telegram messaging app by Aamaq news agency, the group’s mouthpiece, saying that four fighters attacked a gathering of Shiites in Ein Tamar.
The statement could not be independently verified by dpa.
