At least 11 dead as suicide bombers target wake in northern Cameroon

At least 11 people were killed and 20 injured after suicide bombers targeted a wake in northern Cameroon on Wednesday.

The attack on the locality of Nguetchewe in Cameroon's Far North Region that borders Nigeria was carried out by two female suicide bombers, staff sergeant Tih Richard told dpa.

"They detonated their explosives during the wake," Richard said, adding that the 11 dead include the two suicide bombers.

Nguetchewe is a small village near the border with Nigeria where a French priest, Georges Vandenbeusch, was kidnapped in November 2013. He was held for 50 days before being released.

The kidnapping was blamed on Islamist insurgent group Boko Haram.

Four people were killed when suicide bombers attacked a school in Cameroon's Far North Region on January 28. The attack came days after three suicide bombers blew themselves up in the village of Bodo in northern Cameroon, killing at least 25 people and themselves.

Cameroon has become a major target for Nigeria-based Boko Haram, which has killed nearly 1,200 people in Cameroon since 2013, according to the government.
