Japan governor okays restart of nuclear reactors despite injunction

A Japanese governor on Tuesday green-lighted the restart of nuclear reactors on the Sea of Japan Coast despite an injunction by a local court preventing the plant's operation.

Fukui Governor Issei Nishikawa told a news conference that he approved the resumption of the two units at the Takahama Nuclear Power Station, 400 kilometres west of Tokyo.

In February, the reactors operated by Kansai Electric Power Co cleared the Nuclear Regulation Authority's screening based on updated regulations implemented following the 2011 nuclear disaster at Fukushima Daiichi plant.

The Fukui District Court issued the injunction in April, prohibiting the operator from resuming the operation due to safety issues.

In August, Japan ended nearly two years without nuclear energy when Kyushu Electric Power Co restarted a reactor on the south-western island of Kyushu, and a second at the same plant two months later.

The other 46 reactors in Japan remain idled following the triple meltdown at Fukushima though the restart of one at Ikata Nuclear Power Plant on Shikoku island was approved by a governor of Ehime prefecture in October.
