Israeli man killed, three injured as violence escalates in West Bank

Israeli police are searching for a gunman after he opened fire on a family's car, causing a crash that left one Israeli man dead and three others injured, the Israeli army said Friday.

The incident follows multiple knife attacks and clashes between security forces and protesters that have occurred over the last two days in the West Bank.

Earlier on Friday an Israeli policeman shot a female Palestinian assailant after she attacked a man at The Tombs of the Patriarchs, a sacred place for both Jews and Muslims.

Tensions in the West Bank have escalated since Thursday, when a 17-year-old Palestinian stabbed and killed a 13-year-old Israeli girl while she was sleeping. The assailant entered the family's home, located in an Israeli settlement.

In response to the attacks around the southern West Bank city of Hebron, the Israeli army said it was sealing off the area and deploying several hundred additional soldiers to the region.

On Thursday another Palestinian was shot after he stabbed a man and a woman in the Israeli coastal city of Netanya.

Israeli and Palestinian areas have suffered a wave of violence since October, including dozens of knife attacks launched by Palestinians protesting the ongoing occupation and perceived Israeli violations that are denied by Israel.

A 63-year-old Palestinian also died on Friday after inhaling tear gas sprayed by the Israeli army at a checkpoint near Ramallah, the Palenstinian Health Ministry said.

The Israeli army was reportedly using tear gas to prevent Palestinians from accessing a disputed Jerusalem holy site known to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary and to Jews as the Temple Mount.

The ministry also said that the Israeli army fired on demonstrators in Ramallah and injured two people, one of them a 12-year-old boy. The Israeli army did not comment on the incidents.

More than 220 Palestinians - most of them knife attackers and other assailants - and 34 Israelis have been killed in the violence.

Israel took control of the West Bank and East Jerusalem in the Six-Day War of 1967.
