Israel to close Gaza, West Bank crossings during Jewish holiday

Crossings into the Gaza Strip and West Bank will be closed starting Sunday night, when Jewish New Year festivities begin, according to an Israeli army statement.

The crossings will reopen Tuesday night with the end of Rosh Hashanah celebrations, it said, with Palestinians allowed to use the crossings only under special circumstances.

The Israeli army often closes the crossings during holidays due to heightened security concerns. On Friday, an Israeli soldier was stabbed at a checkpoint crossing north of Jerusalem by an assailant who was shot and killed, the army said.

The Islamic Hamas movement had called for a "day of rage" on Friday in the West Bank and Jerusalem in remembrance of the one-year anniversary of its latest intifada.
