Israel's secret service Shin Bet has prohibited the nation's basketball club Ironi Nahariya from playing a FIBA Europe Cup last 16 match in Turkey over security concerns, a sports ministry spokeswoman said Tuesday.
The spokeswoman said the ministry is in contact with FIBA Europe and Shin Bet and doing everything it can to find a solution.
The match is scheduled for February at Turkish side Royal Hali Gaziantep, with Naharina winning the first leg game 96-75 at home.
Gaziantep is located not far away from the Syrian border and areas controlled by the Islamic State group.
FIBA Europe said it is in contact with the Israeli basketball federation and the authorities in Gaziantep in order to "assure the safety of everyone involved." It said there had been no problems at previous Gaziantep home games in the competition.
If Nahariya don't play they will be eliminated from the tournament, and the sports ministry said such a move could also harm Israel's sport in general.
