Indonesian patrol boat apprehended four foreign boats allegedly fishing illegally in Indonesian waters, an official said Sunday.
“The Hiu Macan 01 patrol boat apprehended on Friday three boats under Malaysian flag and another one under Vietnamese flag when they were fishing without permit in Indonesia’s exclusive economic zone in the Natuna Sea,” Captain Mardiono, a spokesman for the Maritime Security Agency said in a press release.
Mardiono said, in addition to fishing illegally, the four boats had also trespassed into Indonesian water.
The boats were being escorted to Tarempa in the Riau Islands province for further investigation.
Indonesian maritime authorities have been beefing up efforts to crack down on poachers stealing its maritime resources, going so far as to blow up the poachers’ boats to make a point about its fight against illegal fishing.
