German, French citizens among those killed in Ivory Coast attack

The four known foreigners killed in an Ivory Coast beach resort attack that claimed 22 lives at the weekend are citizens of Germany, France, Burkina Faso and Cameroon, an Ivorian military spokesman said Monday.

The attack at three beach hotels took place at Grand-Bassam, 40 kilometres south-east of the economic capital Abidjan. The site is popular with both Ivorians and foreigners.

An extraordinary council of Ivorian ministers will be held on Monday to discuss address the security threats the country is facing, said Ivorian government spokesman Kone Bruno.

French Foreign Minister Jean Marc-Ayrault and Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve will visit the country on Tuesday to "show support to Ivorians," Bruno said.

Al-Qaeda's wing in North Africa has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The claim by al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb was carried on al-Akhbar, a news outlet often given statements by extremists in the region.

This was the third major attack by extremists in West Africa in the past several months.
