Bernie Sanders endorses former rival Hillary Clinton for US president, putting aside a long, bitter Democratic Party primary challenge against the former secretary of state.
"She will be the Democratic nominee for president," Sanders says in acknowledging that he will fall short of Clinton in the number of delegates needed to secure the party's nomination at its convention this month.
"And I intend to do everything I can to make certain she will be the next president of the United States."
Sanders recalled his campaign's unexpected success in winning 22 of 56 Democratic Party primaries or caucuses and in advocating for progressive causes, but says he will focus on the future to endorse Clinton.
"That future will be shaped more by what happens on November 8 in voting booths across our nation than by any other event in the world," he says.
