Dutch woman reporting rape in Qatar sentenced for extramarital sex

A Qatari court has handed down a one-year suspended prison sentence to a Dutch tourist for having extramarital sex, even though the woman had reported being raped, the Foreign Ministry in The Hague said Monday.

The court also fined the 22-year-old 3,000 Qatari riyals (824 dollars) and ordered her extradition. The woman said someone had drugged her and the next thing she became aware of was waking up with torn clothes in a strange flat, her lawyer Brian Lokollo told Dutch television at the weekend. She was arrested when she reported the rape to the police, but denied the accusations against her.

The alleged rapist, a Syrian man, has also been arrested and was sentenced to 140 lashes.

Sex outside marriage is banned in the conservative Muslim country.

Both were also found guilty of drinking alcohol.

The Dutch ambassador to Qatar attended the trial. Following the session, she told reporters she hoped the woman would be released within the next few days. She vowed to do everything in her power to get her out of the country as soon as possible.

The woman has been in prison since March.
