A heavy explosion in Kabul targeting protesters has left scores of casualties, an official said.
"A crowd of casualties submitted to Isteqlal hospital are in bad condition," said Dr Mohammad Sabir Nasib, head of a local hospital near the location of the protest.
Nasib added that some protesters had died, although the exact number of casualties was unknown.
“We were near the area where explosion happened," said Zakarya Safari, a protester.
"At first we thought that it is a mine explosion but when I reached the area I realized that this was a car suicide attack," said Safari.
A high number of casualties is feared due to the size of the demonstration, which was staged in protest against a planned electricity line.
No group has claimed responsibility for the blast.
